One evening in November, a newsreader’s voice falters: Hamburg has suffered a devastating first strike. Within hours, the familiar world collapses. People fight to survive—and to preserve the possibility of a tomorrow.

The novel follows very different lives across the city and its outskirts: passengers on the last train north, students in Harburg, a marriage on the Elbchaussee, a young woman and her blind lover on St. Pauli, and people preparing in the Nordheide. It is not a military scenario but a novel about what war does to human beings.
